Tips:
Traveling with Kids: Planes, Trains and Discount Car Rental
Article by Amy Richter
Traveling with kids can be a nightmare, let’s just be honest. You basically have two choices: either strategically plan your travel in advance and be prepared for anything (and I do mean anything) or plan for an overwhelming amount of aggravation-for you, for them, and for anyone who has the pleasure of sitting near you. Whether you are flying or driving a discount car rental, there are some things you can do to save your sanity. Let’s go with the “plan ahead” concept.
Travel by Air: Tips
If you are traveling on a plane, you have a few obstacles to cross right away, such as the lack of pit stops, inconvenient bathrooms, and fellow passengers in very close proximity. But here’s what you can do to try and head off a disaster:
Try to book a flight around the kids’ normal routine. Getting them up too early or keeping them up too late or intercepting a naptime can backfire-don’t count on them sleeping. Flying can be exciting or daunting for a kid, so relaxing is not likely to be an easy feat. Shoot for a flight time when they are generally the most content-perhaps mid morning, early evening, right after a meal, etc.
Bring lots to do. Realistically, kids have an attention span of like five minutes. So, get a tote bag and have a number of quiet things to do. Consider bringing hand held games, coloring books, doodle pads, travel games, DVD player with headphones, etc. And don’t forget to bring any loveys, like a blanket or stuffed animal.
Bring snacks. Not something I’d recommend for normal behavior modification, but in certain circumstances, you just have to bribe them with treats.
Travel by Car: Tips
This is a bit easier. If you’re traveling by car it may take much longer to get there, but you do have more options for keeping the kids under control. Bear in mind, however, that if you’ve gotten a discount car rental, you’ll certainly want to be more cognizant of messes. (I’d recommend getting a pad that goes under a car seat and/or covering the seat with a blanket-it’ll alleviate some stress about staining the upholstery.) But, you can:
Make pit stops as needed. Try to curtail the need to potty, but plan a few breaks for them to run off energy or stretch their legs. Rather than eating in a restaurant, which is nearly as confining as a car, consider making sandwiches and eating at a park along the way. You don’t have to stress about behavior and they can run off some steam. And, hopefully, they’ll be ready for a little snooze when you pile back in.
Plan more driving during sleep times. Leave in the middle of the night if you have to. As opposed to flying, kids will often sleep longer stretches in the car-ask any parent who’s had to drive an infant around the block at bedtime.
Again, make sure there are ample things to do, just as when you are flying. In a car, you do have a few more options, such as car bingo, road sign game, license plate game, and more. Look online for more great ideas.
So, go ahead and book that flight or discount car rental-you’re prepared now for the nightmare of traveling with the kids!
